Why does my open suse linux run so slowly?

i have installed open suse linux as a second O.S along with windows on another partishion. when i try to use this application it runs incredibly slow. now alloting 40GB for each system, the windows apps run much faster.is it because of being installed beside windows? i have tested the dsl line speed on both O.S's using speakeasy speed test and they both register closely to one another- so why is the linux so slow?|||Try the tip offered here for Disabling Unwanted Startup Processes for Performance Tuning http://www.linuxboards.org/showthread.ph鈥?/a>|||b/c it does ask best buy|||as you may have noticed during the installation, Yet Another Setup Tool from SuSE asked you quite a few questions;

most had "safe defaults"; alas, even those defaults aren't always the best BET in town; they are just... safe.

if again, you decided to change some of those defaults, it's not always easy to get it right the 1st time;

even though it is unnerving and time consuming, you may want to try it a few time, especially paying attention to leave the Internet (security) settings on their own.

there shouldn't be any interference with M$ LostDOS;

it's just inert files, place holders of kinds, while you are running Linux.

Faster dsl line seems slower than slower cable line?

recently i switched from Comcasts 1.5mbps internet to ATTs 6mpbs DSL, when i run the speed test it shows as though im getting close to the 6mbps but when i load web pages ect, it seems much slower than my comcast 1.5mbps line (which ran on speed tests as 1.5mbps)... whats the deal-e-o?|||Most likely your computer. I do DSL tech support for another prominent ISP...and I hear it ALL the time where people are complaining of web pages running slow, but run a speed test and it comes back 100% of the speed given.

It's most likely that with your faster connection you've not only been able to download the stuff you WANT on your computer (music, movies, naked women :D) a whole lot faster, but the bad stuff you DON'T want (viruses, malware, grandpa pr0n D:) on your computer is able to get on much faster as well. I would suggest cleaning up your computer and you will enjoy your extra bandwidth much more!

Try malwarebyte's anti-malware. It's free and it rocks. Run a quick scan on your system and you'll be surprised all the crud on your machine. It finds and removes things most Anti-Virus software won't find.

Also make the switch to Firefox if you're an Internet Explorer user.

Download links in the sources below.|||judging from your description of the issue, it sounds like the DSL is slower than the cable modem. Since it was instantly after you switched to DSL then i would say it is not your computer.

Not sure how much i trust the speed test sites these days, plus it seems as though there may be some trickery happening by the ISP's. For example i often times will be experiencing slow connection speeds but when i go to start a speed test, my connection mysteriously speeds up! I have no facts to back this up but have considered that the ISP (comcast) may throttle my connection except when accessing the popular speed test sites. Could just be coincidence or my paranoia though.

Another thing to think about ae your DNS servers. Some dns servers are slower than others, try putting in the Comcast DNS servers and see if that makes a difference. Also do a traceroute to a site you are having issues with and see how many hops it is taking to get there. There could be a lot more between you and the sites you visit than there used to be with cable.

One more thing. did u install software from ATT? if so is there any antivirus or anti malware apps that may be "checking" data as it flows in thus slowing down that data flow?

At&t dsl vs Charter cable?

I need help deciding which service to get I have Charter cable internet currently my speed is 10mbps. At%26amp;t dsl offers a max speed of 6mbps in my area. I want the best service for online gaming. My current internet speed test is 100mi away and is 49ms with cable would this be lower with dsl?|||cable (co-ax) is generally faster than DSL which is using telephone copper cables, and your restricted by the characteristics in the telephone line and distance from your local telephone exchange ( 7 Km radius) and the condition of the pairs, they may have faults in sections of cable that is ok for voice, but may cause drop offs when connected to ADSL? IF you go down the DSL path make sure the run an error data package from your telephone line to check error rate, and if it is within specs for the service, difference between guarantee and offer? You will never get maximum speed anyway, for the above reasons.

Can i use a sbc dsl modem for earthlink service? need to test some things?

i got a old earthlink broadmax modem and it is too old to receive 3 meg service(which i have been receiving for 2 years now, go figure)

i can get a new modem if i sign up for another year of service

at $49.99 a month after being told by tier 2 tech that i could get a modem free of charge with no commitment, i have been a earthlink customer for 6 years now!

i can probably BORROW a sbc branded modem to test for higher speeds but will it work on earthlink service?|||Most phone companies use a specific kind of DSL modem within a certain MAC address range. As long as the modem you're testing is from the same provider, it should work. Good luck!

My wired ethernet is slow, but my wireless isn't. What might be wrong?

My ethernet is painfully slow! It just started happening about a week ago and not sure if any configurations had changed. Before things were speedy but now download is a crawl (upload is the same).

I checked DSL Speed Test from SpeakEasy.com. I'm on T1 connection.

For my PC desktop with wired ethernet the speed is like 157kbps and the upload (well couldn't even finish the test cause it was too slow!)

With the Wireless it is 2355kbps download and 2707kbps upload.

I am on a wireless router and have reset it and it has latest firmware.

I have done the ipconfig /renew /release on the pc but no luck. Firewall is disabled on my PC.

Anyone know how to start debugging this?|||Well, from a first point of view, I would say you've damaged the ethernet cable itself. Follow the cable bit by bit intill you find a damage spot, if not, it could also be becuase you've bent the cable to hard past the 90o angle and you need to loosen it up a bit.

Hope this helps.

Wireless Network Problem.?

have a typical modem/router provided by my Broadband provider downstairs attached to the telephone line.

My desktop computer upstairs seems to have a large problem connecting to it wirelessly with frequent dropouts and when I do a DSL speed test on the internet, I rarely get above a 600kps download speed although the download speed according to the modem is about 13000kps.

I recently replaced my old belkin wireless adaptor with a new Linksys Wireless-G PCI adaptor however, the problem still remains. I think that this is to do with distance and the amount of objects between my computer and and the router.

However, My laptop connects to it fine with a speed of about 10,000kps anywhere in the house so I'm not quite so sure now. I've also changed all the settings on the desktop to make them similar to the laptop.

Also, I was looking at buying a Belkin N1 Wireless Desktop Card for my PC and wondered if it would work with the router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!|||With the 802.11g adapter you just bought, purchasing an 802.11n router would be a waste of money, because the network is always reduced to the speed of the slowest adapter, which in your case sounds like the 802.11g Linksys.

Now, as your laptop is connecting just fine anywhere in the house, it does not sound like the issue is with the modem/router. It has to be something in your computer that is experiencing this issue.

When you connect to the Internet and are disconnected, do you receive any error message, and is there a red x across your wireless connection icon in the notificaiton area, or is the page just blank, and your wireless connection, when you place your cursor over the connection icon in the notificaiton are states that you are connected?

It sounds like you are having issues with your Internet protocols within your system experiencing the issue. It is possible that the connection for that computer is not configured properly.

The first action you should take is running the Network Setup Wizard again. Enter all of the information, and make sure that the Workgroup name is the same in every computer. While the Workgroup name mostly has to do with connectivity between computers on your network, it is best to ensure that setting is correct.

Have you tried rebooting your modem/router and see if that corrects your issue?

When your experiance speed issues, what exactly are you doing? Do you have too many services and programs connecting to the internet interfering with your bandwidth, by consumming bandwidth you can't afford to be used while doing some action with the Internet, such as streaming media?

Have you installed an accelerator on this system? If so, remove it because they can cause the very issues you are experiancing.

Have you tried tweaking your adapter configurations, such as TCP Receive Window (RWIN), or, Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU), which control technical details of how your TCP/IP connection transers and receives data? Vista is very good at automatically knowing which settings are best and configuring them, and XP has many sites which claim to have methods of tweeking these for better performance, but in fact, if not done correctly, with a full understanding of the ramifications and results, disaster can occur.

If you have changed these settings, consider resetting them back to default levels and see if that corrects your speed issues. You see, over tweaked settings can cause reduced speeds and even knock out connections when packets send by these tweaked adapters hit routers not equiped to handle them.

You can use Windows Task Manager to measure the performance of all active network connections. Open TAsk Manager and then click on the Networking tab, while you have all of your networked components running. The graph will help you locate issues, and discover where the issue may be, so you can correct things for more optimin use of the network.

A good book to purchase to assist with these issues, and learning how to use the many network troubleshooting utilites which ship with Windows is the Windows Vista Inside Out book by Ed Bott and a couple of others, put out my Microsoft Press. You can locate this book at any book store, or order it if needed. I highly reccomend this book as it also contains a lot more information in managing and using Vista. There is also a book for Windows XP by the same author. Actually, the Vista book is an update, is smaller than the XP book, so it wouldn't hurt to buy them both. They cost about $25.00 each. They also come with a CD with a load of resources, the book in ebook format, and many utilities and other resources worth having.

If all else fails, contact both your ISP and adapter, technical assistance. They should be able to talk you through several troubleshooting tasks and get this narrowed down.

Sorry I was not of more assistance. I hope you get your issue corrected as soon as possible. I hate slow or unstable connections! Please have a nice day.

*edit* Ok, now we are getting somewhere. lol

As it is sometimes telling you that it is a DNS problem, you can be pretty darn sure that is exactly the issue. Since the problem is only with the one computer, we can rule out it being an issue with either your modem or router. So, this slims down the issue nicely. It is the computer you are using.

I am wondering what version of OS you are using in this computer. Is it XP or Vista? If it were Vista, you could go into the Network and Sharing Center and use its Diagnostic Tools. XP does not have such a nice neat method of diagnosing network issues. %26lt;drat%26gt;

First some background. The Domain Name System is a crucial part of the internet. It translates host names, (such as http://www.howstuffworks.com) into its numerical IP address, (such as 69.12.129.23). All websites, computers, and other network devices, (such as print servers, game consoles, etc.) any hardware device which makes a connection to the internet must have a unique numerical IP address, in the above format for IPv4. There are now longer addresses for IPv6 as well, due to the fact that when the Internet protocol was first built, nobody ever conceived using that many IP address. Now that we are exceeding those original range of numerical IP addresses, a new protocol had to be created, in order to meet the ever growing internet. Due to the fact that it would be next to impossible for everyone to actually remember such addresses, the Domain Name System was created, to give alphabetical names easy to remember, and have them resolved into their numerical equilivents.

If the DNS service failes, the connection to the internet fails as well. I am surprised you are able to connect at all, with this being listed as a cause. The fact you have any connection makes me suspecious that your DNS server has not completely failed, but is somehow being interfered with, or in the process of failing.

One good method of checking is to use the Ping.exe utility. If you can use Ping command to reach a numeric address outside your network but are unable to browse websites by name, the problem is almost certainly related to the DNS configuration. It might be neccasary to assign this computer a Static IP address, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Open a command prompt by clicking Start, Run, then type in cmd and hit Enter, or OK.

Now, you need an outside numerical IP address to test. Use a different computer and type a popular website URL into it as though you want to browse there. Use IE if possible.

When the page is loadiing. look at the very bottom of the browser window and look for the IP address of the website. Write it down as quick as you can. If you do not get it written down quickly enough, start over and collect more of it.

Now, take that IP address into your command prompt and type it at the prompt. It will look something like: Documents and Settings\Your User Name%26lt;_ the _ will be blinking.

Type in: ping xx.xx.xxx.xx Hit Enter and information will scroll down the page.

Now, the Xs are the IP address. Note that there is a space between ping and the IP address.

If it times out, then there is a definate issue with DNS server.

What you should see is the name of the website at that IP address. What you don't want to see are four time out messages.

Now, type in the URL, such as www.howstuffworks.com like this:

ping www.howstuffworks.com

Don't forget the space between the command and the URL. It should resolve into the IP address you typed in earlier.

Ask yourself these questions when suspecting trouble with the DNS server.

1. Do your TCP/IP settings point to the right DNS servers? Inspect the details of your IP configuration and compare the DNS servers listed there with those recommended by your internet service provider. You might need to call your ISP.

Another method of obtaining this information is in the modem or routers configuration. If you know the IP address of your modem or router, type it in and then look under the Internet for this information. There should be at least two DNS IP addresses.

2. Is your ISP experiencing DNS problems? While this is a question, it is for future use, because you have networked computers which are doing fine.

3. Have you installed any "internet accelerator" utilities? These types of programs usually cause more harm than do any good. They work by editing the Hosts file on your computer to maatch IP addresses and host (server) names. When Windows finds a host name in the Hosts file, it uses the IP address listed there, and doesn't send the request to a DNS server. If website server had a change of IP address, your Hosts file will lead you to the wrong address.

4. Temporary DNS problems can be caused by the DNS cache, which Windows maintains for performance issues. If you suddenly have trouble reaching a specific site on the web and you're sure there isn't anything wrong with the site, type this command to clear the cache:

ipconfig /flushdns

Note there is a space between ipconfig and /flushdns.

A hosts file can be useful on a mid-sixe network when all computers have static IP addresses. By entering computer names and IP addressses into a Hosts file, you eliminate the need to broadcast messages around the network by looking for each machine. Instead, Windows finds the machine name and matching IP address in the Hosts file and goes straight to the correct address.

To edit the Hosts file, use Notepad. Open the Hosts file, it doesn't have an extension, in %systemroot%\System32|Drivers|Etc. The comments in this file explain its syntax and are very easy for User's to follow. Just trust yourself and go ahead and edit it. If you are worried of doing something wrong, make a backup copy which you can quickly replace if anything goes wrong, which it won't.

To perform a quick repair on your connection, right click the connection icon in the notification area, select Repair, and allow it to do its job.

Or, you can open a command prompt again, and type this:

For IPv4 type: ipconfig /renew

Enter

For IPv6 type: ipconfig renew6

Enter

If you are still having issues after you follow these suggestions and tips, contact your ISP for assistance. They could help you do more detailed troubleshoting. You could also take your system to a reputable repair shop and have them perform some repairs, or do detailed troubleshooting for or with you.

I highly recommend a mom/pop shop because this type of shop is smaller and tend to provide better service. The large "big box" shops, such as Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, etc, tend to be so large they don't care if they lose a few cutomers, and so don't provide as good service. Also, the smaller shops tend to go above and beyond what the larger shops are willing to do for the same or close amount of money. In addition to this consideration, is that the smaller shop may be willing to allow you to sit in while they work on your system so you can learn as you go.

Good luck and much success with your system. I hope you get the connection issue fixed as soon as possible.|||N router will work but will not run at N speed.|||It sounds like your front end bus on your desktop is simply not able to handle the speeds offered by the connection. Changing the type or brand name of wireless routers will not make much different as long as they are in the same category, Residential routers.|||I had the same problem with a Netgear and Belkin router.

Sometimes the routers loose their wireless capabilities and you will have to unplug them and plug them back in to reset them.

One solution to the problem, if you have an ethernet port in your PC, is to use a wireless bridge instead. These devices are often sold as "wireless gaming adapters". Place the receiver away from any electronic devices and try placing it in different positions. You then have a gap between the wireless receiver and the PC as long as the ethernet cord is. The one supplied may not be very long but they can be swapped out.

My ISP (DSL EXTREME), says their basic DSL service has speeds up to, 768 kbps/ 368 kbps. My modems show as the maximum speed 224 kbps/128 kbps. But when I test the speed it only runs at 176 kbps the download. There are no problems with the line I had ATT before running al very high speed, I'm in Los Angeles in a centric commercial / residential area. I know no ISP is perfect, ATT had slow periods and down times every night after 9pm. All the speed test were done also with a Linux OS as well as with Windows XP. According to what is known as basic DSL running very slow going at speeds of about 280 kbps, but DSL extreme is just too slow and I fill is just falsely claiming their service is good and cheap. Switching school network from Verizon DSL to Comcast Cable? What do I need to know?

I'm a brand new school IT administrator for a small private school. We currently have about 45 users and around 77 computers on the network (including a laptop cart and a lab). We have Verizon DSL and our speed tests seem to show a speed of about 1.1 - 1.4 Mbps (with just me on the network!). It's really slow and I'm worried about how slow it will be once everyone actually returns to school. I would like to upgrade to cable. What do I need to know about the transition? Is it a simple installation and then just replacing the DSL modem with a cable modem or is it more complex than that? I am just taking over this position and there are lots of issues with the current network I'm trying to resolve. Are there limitations that would keep us from getting a faster speed even if we made the switch to cable? I am not sure about all of the internal wiring, but I believe it is CAT5 (it may be up about 10 years old), which should certainly support anything we can get via cable in our relatively rural area. Anything else I should know?|||all you have to do is change the modem.

cable connetions do not require a PPPoE service so it is even easier. the connection is way more reliable than DSL.

So be happy. this is the right step to take. just make sure that the router , switch, or hub settings are the optimal.

good luck|||Yes, just replace the modem. Cat5 is just fine. If it works - don't touch it. Yes, you should replace the equipment if its 10yrs old. You should get 100MB or more from Comcast.

Also, wow 1.1-1.4 Mbps - super slow if you have more than 3 people on it. Did the school just get online? You must not have been able to share that 1 connection with 77 computers. If so, you must have multiple dsl lines for each class room. Really? You should check this out because if you have multiple lines / more equipment will be needed. Let us know what city your in and maybe there is someone that will look at it for you.

Slow DSL speed! Why!?!?

For 2 days now I haven't been able to achieve download speeds of over 100kbs/s. I phoned my provider (Orange UK) and they say there is no report on my server. The problem is the same for every computer on my wireless network. The customer support is clueless. The engineers are meant to be testing my line but I haven't heard anything! My girlfriend is away at the moment and she's going crazy cos I can't Skype her and she's freakin out! What could be cause of my slow speed? What things can I try? P.S. I'm using a Macbook with OSX10.6.2 Connecting Via an Orange "Livebox" which Should be running at 8mb/s.|||Orange UK is giving you full speed from their end but not reaching exactly at your point.

Why is my dsl internet from verizon only giving me 300 KB/s when I ordered 3 MB/s? I have only one device hooked up and I'm not doing anything else when i run the speed test. The highest I have ever gotten is 350 Kb/s.|||First thing I would do is cycle power on the Verizon DSL modem and router if you're using one.

Unplug power cables on the router and modem.

First plug in the modem and wait a minute or two to establish a Internet connection.

Now plug in the router.

Reboot your PC and go to http://speedtest.net to test your speed.

Internet speeds are measured in Mbps, which is millions of (bits) per second, not to be confused with MB/s which is millions of (bytes) per second.

If your speed is not what you are paying for, then call Verizon and complain.

Good Luck...|||Your internet service is sold to you in Bits. You purchased a 3 MegaBit speed package from your ISP. Downloads are calculated in Bytes though. There are 8 Bits in 1 Byte. 3 (your internet speed) divided by 8 (the number of bits in a byte) equals 0.25. 250 KilaBytes is your maximum download speed. So you're actually getting more than what you're paying for. If you want to go faster, purchase more speed from your ISP.|||B = Bytes, b = bits. DSL is sold in bits. You have 3 million bits per second. Many speed meters measure it in Bytes per second. Your theoretical download speed is 375 kB/s or 375 KiloBytes per second. In short, when you include overhead for IP, your 350 is very good and about as high as it is capable of doing.|||Call them right now to tell them your problem if they said that you may have problem in your cable, router....etc trust them. However that always happens if there is problems in the router :-) Good Luck!

Test xbox live speed?

Is anybody else getting lag on Xbox live? I have been doing xbox live sense halo 3 came out (played Halo 3 for a month, now Call of Duty 4 sense then). Call of duty 4 has played fine with no lag most of the times. every so often my internet would go down (Qwest DSL).

But the last couple of times (last night, and Saturday) the lag has been really bad. I start a game fine, but then 4 or 5 times during a match it well start to loose connection. I reset my gateway that the xbox connected straight to. It gets a little better but still some lag problems. I can't figure out what is causing it. I do an Internet test on my computer, and I'm getting my 1.2 mbs but usually only 500 kbs upload. (even though i signed up for 1.5, and 7 upload)

Also I need to know A good dsl speed test because i hear Verizon is not true?|||You can't uninstall Internet Explorer- it's a part of Windows. Every time you view a help file, that's actually a stripped-down version of IE. Every time you run Windows Update, you have to use IE. Just install Firefox- browsers don't conflict with each other.

Here is the site for a speed test: http://www.speedtest.net/ FYI, Verizon doesn't "lie" exactly- no one gives you real speeds equal to the posted speeds because of network congestion.|||You just need to download and install firefox. Firefox can be downloaded from http://www.firefox.com

IE7 can not be removed, as it is integrated to the operating system.|||You do not need to uninstall IE7, you can download and install Firefox and have both of them on your PC without any problems.

What Is The Minimum DSL Internet Speed For Xbox Live?

I have 864 Kbps Download / 160 Kbps Upload Speed.

I am wondering if that speed works on Xbox Live. I was hoping to play games like Modern Warfare 2 and Test Drive Unlimited. I already know I am inable to host but is that speed good just to like play and chat with other players? I am unable to upgrade to anything faster. I have searched the web and have seen both that it will run fine and that it will be impossible to even connect to live. Hoping to hear to someone who has from around that speed and has an xbox. Thanks|||O yea, thats fine for sure. I have like half that speed and it runs quite smoothly. You're fine for sure. Also, the first time you sign up for live I think you get like a free trial. So u could try that and see how it works. But yea that should be a fine speed.

Is 120. Kb/sec a slow internet download speed for Att Dsl Elite internet?

Ok I have Att Dsl Elite internet (which is the fastest) and I am downloading a game on Left 4 dead 2 on Steam. Steam says that I am download at an average of 120 Kb/sec. Is this a slow speed for the fastest connectivity available on AT%26amp;T.

I also did a test on speedtest.net and it says 3.96Mb/s, upload 0.63Mb/sec, and ping 78ms through ISB, SBC internet services.

I also live in El Paso, Texas if that helps

Also I know its not my home computer, since my dad has a new desktop that has almost the same speed.

Also I am connected through an At%26amp;t router that I have had more than 2 years and that connects to my internet line in my house|||Your download speed is only determined by what the provider has you provisioned for and latency/congestion between you and the provider's DSLAM in the Central Office. PC Tune up programs will do nothing for your speed and are simply junk IMHO.

If you are worried you are not getting your provisioned speed, open a ticket with the provider to check your provisioning and throughput. "Fastest connectivity available on AT%26amp;T" doesn't tell us what technology they are using to get DSL to you (IDSL, ADSL, SDSL, etc.) nor what they have you provisioned for, and the provider is the best source to investigate what you are looking for.|||There is no way to grantee a minimum download, in example if you download a game from a kenyan man (high latency for the place you are logged in) who has dial-up connection it will last years to you receive the file. Your ISP can't grantee speed downloads.

DSL 20.000 but Only 2.500 KB/s Downstream?

I got a little problem here, we got DSL 20.000, the Speed-Test on Speedtest.net even proves this: http://www.speedtest.net/result/977073220.png

the only Problem is, Wherever i download Something, Chip Online, Gamona, 4Players whatsoever, i get a Maximum download Rate of 2,5 MB/sek

can anyone tell me, why this happens, and maybe have a solution to speed up my download? thanks|||2.5 Mbps is the correct speed. Your ISP sells their service in Bits. You purchased a 20 MegaBit package from your ISP. Downloads are calculated in Bytes though. There are 8 Bits in 1 Byte. 20 (your purchased speed from the ISP) divided by 8 (the number of bits in a byte) equals 2.5.|||You are confusing 20Mbps which is megabits per second with 2.5 MBps which is megabytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte. Do the math. How many times does 8 go into 20,000?

I have recently got Dsl connection..but i am getting half the speed of 1 mbps?

But many people i know are getting almost the whole speed, now there is nothing wrong with the phone which is brand new and connection with fiber optics plus the modem is new and has been checked by the ISP but i doubt there honesty and i am having the feeling that they have done some adjustments with the modem so its not giving me the whole speed besides not more then 50% of the package i have done everything from settings speed tests, ping tests given me A grade result (perfect) now what might be wrong .....?

pleasue guide me a solution because company is f@cking ignorant about costumer service.well the modem is ZXDSL 831 thanks|||Check with your ISP to make sure your connection speed is supposed to be 1 mb/s. There are several different flavors of DSL with different connection speeds. If you're fully sure you're paying for a 1 mb/s connection and you're getting substandard speed, keep in mind that your neighborhood will share a portion of network bandwidth and how heavily they use the internet might affect you. If everything is testing to 1 mb/s but one or two programs don't work correctly (like LimeWire or another file sharing client) your ISP may be throttling back certain network protocols these programs use. The only real way to ensure a full 1 mb/s connection is to work with your ISP, so try to be diplomatic and understanding as possible with these people as it is hard to troubleshoot a network problem over the phone.

Qwest Fiber Optic DSL 20 Mbps or Cox 25 Mbps cable?

I have Cox 25 Mbps cable but when I do a speed test it is around 15-17 Mbps and I like to do netflix plus gaming. Should I switch to the Qwest Fiber Optic DSL 20 Mbps or stay where I am? What do you think?|||Firstly, there's no game in the world that would require that much bandwidth - unless you were the host.

NetFlix has a capped out Bandwidth rate of 2.1MB/s, meaning, you'll never get higher than that.

The only advantage to switching to DSL is that it's independent. You share no connections, and you will have a 100% constant bandwidth delivery, no spiking up, or down.

So if you're just looking for seemless interruption and you can afford SDSL from qwest, then, by all means, to each their own.

But the truth is that you are already downloading / browsing much faster than servers can provide for you - you're capped, world-wide mostly.

If you can find a site where you can download @ more than 6.5 MB/s, let me know.

The truth is that Fiber Optics Cable = 1OC. Verizon FiOS offers 45 MB/s @ 1OC.

After that comes OC48, which is 2.1 GB/s. Then, the fastest in the world is OC192 operating at 9.6 GB/s.

Like I said though, finding a use for this much bandwidth (other than hosting) is nearly impossible.

What should my internet speed be?

when i had my internet hooked up, i took the biggest package they had which is - 1.5m/512k dsl. but it still seems slow. Why is my download speed so slow?

I have DSL and I took this speed test:

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

The results show that my download speed is 320 kb/s and my upload speed is 313 kb/s. But when I download files like a PC game demo, it only downloads at a rate of 40 kb/s. It's been slow like this ever since we got DSL. I've checked for viruses with AVG and found none and I am having no other problems with my computer, everything seems to be running fine. Online games work good and webpages come up fast, so why is there such a slow download rate when downloading other files?|||You have to make sure you don't confuse Kbps with kb/s. They're two different things

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

Ignore the first part, when the test is completely done, near the bottom it will tell you something like this:

Download Speed: 6158 kbps (769.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 1852 kbps (231.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

kbps is kilobits per second. KB/sec is kilobytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, the kbps will be 8 times higher than Kb/s. Why is my Dsl connection so slow?

I had Charter cable's 10 meg service and was getting 1.5-1.7 meg on the speakeasy speed test.I switched over to Embarq/Sprint 5 meg Dsl and my speeds are 1.1 meg.I have checked my Pc over good, ran anti-virus and spyware scanners, defragged the hd,got rid of temp files and cookies.I also run a program called System mechanic 7 that says my pc is good to go.

The tech service guy at Embarq told me I should be seeing at least 3.0 megs on my speed test, but Iam not even getting half of that.I do have a filter on the line going into the dsl modem. What could be wrong ????|||The way DSL works is that they have repeating stations to amplify the signal and move it along at a high speed. The further away you are from this station, the slower it gets. The result is that the first house on the line is super fast, and the last quite slow. It is very possible you are at the end of the line, and if this is the case there is little you can do about it, except look at another means for your high speed connection.|||contact ur service provider..|||One thing you might check is each phone must have a filter installed between the phone and the wall jack. The are 2 plugs on the filter one for the phone, one goes to the DSL modem. Each phone/ DSL line must use a filter. Look carefully, they can be plugged in either way and if one or more phones or the DSL is plugged in the wrong side it will ruin your DSL speed. Also these fiters can go bad. Try unhooking each filter from the wall plug and rechecking speed. I think you are limited to installing 4 filters.

If I have 1792 kbps shouldn't it be at least around that much? Thanks|||No my friend, your download speed is not only determined by your internet speed. It is also determined by the speed of the connection the server you are downloading from has and it is also determined on the speed set by the owner of the server that each connection to its server can gave.

in other words the owners of the server you are downloading a file from can set the amount of bandwidth any single user can use so it wont be unfair to other users who want to download fast also.|||In theory, yes. Our dsl plan is "1 Meg Zoom Net" blah blah (that's the name on our provider's (local telephone company) brochure). A free speed test told me my download speed was approx 500 kb/s (just under 512). Average download speed on a p2p program is normally max around 100ish Kbps. What do these mean? And maybe how long should it take to download a 10 megabyte file?

Also, would increasing my computer's memory improve said speed any? (my guess is no, but I'm not sure)|||Most Internet Providers will provide download speeds slower than advertised because just like everyone else - they oversell and there is only so much bandwidth.

Your connection speeds are on the slow side - but it sure beats dial up!! 500 kilobytes per second - dial up is around 45 kb/s.

Adding more memory will not improve your connection speed but it will help the performance of your computer.

Is satellite internet THAT much slower than hi-speed DSL/ Cable/ etc.?

Like in a blind test, would I notice without being told it was slower.|||Satellite internet is perfect if you're in a remote region. It's also advisable for industries that require workers to be in remote regions i.e. mining and the military.

Here are some articles that may help you. http://www.articlemonkeys.com/Satellite-鈥?/a>

The main issue with satellite internet is that because of the distance, there will be latency problems. Also, getting one can be quite expensive. However, there are many good satellite service providers, like NewSat for example. They're reliable enough that the US Military is one of their clients.

Here are some things you should consider (pros) about satellite internet:

http://www.newsat.com/eNews/5-thingsyou-鈥?/a>|||it depends - what distance lies between your signal transmitter and the signal receiver - and which is the cheapest option?

If you imagine that there is a need for specific hardware to convert your transmission into a format that can be transmitted to a satellite (or even through a fibre optic cable/copper wire), there comes the point where it's cheaper to send it one way or the other.

For real-world companies, economics outweighs efficiency.

Does buying a newer, faster computer speed up your Internet?

I am limited to about 1mb on my dsl and when I test the speed it runs usually between 600kb to almost 1 mb. Also DSL speed can get lower depending how far you are from the central hub station of the phone company, the quality of the lines, overloaded computer or/with spyware which normally comunicates information in the background to (a) server(s).

One other thing that can also affect is if you have a router it could be un-synchronized from the DSL modem. To help protect from un-synchronizing, take a look at the router's manual for instructions on how to change the IP address of the router as it might have the factory IP which could be the same of the modem and that when it un-synchonizes. If it's a wireless make sure it's password protected, so no one else uses your connection and slow it down.

I hope this information answer's your question.

Can you help me find out why my DOWNLOAD SPEED is VERY SLOW, but my upload speed is about normal ?

I'm using xp-SP2 with the slower version of a DSL phone connection, and browsing with ie.

It used to be adequate for my needs including downloading YouTube Vids with only occasional hickups. Now, most any web page I open takes much more time to load and I can just forget about watching Vids.

I ran SpyBot S/D, and AdAware, and PcTools Anti-Virus with their latest updates on a Full System Scan, but none of this improved performance. (no viruses found)

I took the SPEED TEST available at:

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

and it registered the following result:

DOWNLOAD SPEED = 0

UPLOAD SPEED = 127 kb/s

I recall much better results in the past, with both down and up speeds about the same. (In the 250 kb/s range.)

I have not visited any web sites out of my ordinary usage, nor have I opened any emails with attachments or forwards.

Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to correct this problem.

Your advice will be appreciated.|||it can be a few things -

internet traffic may be heavy on youtube or which ever site you use to download the vids...

did you try all of the "speed sites" listed in there? (dallas - san francisco - washington etc) and compare?

also - when did you notice your d/l's slowing? did you switch internet providers?

are you connected through a router ?

do you have a firewall? if so - try disabling the firewall and see how that works

other than that.. try update your network drivers

right click on my computer icon - click propertes - click hardware tab - click device manager - scroll through list til you see network adapters - click on + to open list - right click on your network card - click either

update drivers

or

scan hardware for changes

or you can try doing a system restore to an earlier date prior to when you noticed the downloads going slow

- click start - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore

a window with a calender will open - click on a day or week (or which ever you want to click on) to set it back to

follow the prompts to the end

it will ask / or restart your computer

once it's back up to the desktop - a window should appear that says either of the following:

system restore was successful

or

system restore was not successful

good luck|||yes

About DSL speed?

ok, i ran a test at http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flas…

the result is

the download speed: 1439kb/s

upload: 398kb/s

latency: 34m

download speed is 1439kb/s? whatever i download from whatever website. my DL speed goes no higher than 300kb/s, 306kb/s is the highest i have ever seen. whats wrong with that?|||Theres a difference.....what you see when you download is 306 KB/s....which is different then kb/s

B=bytes and b=bits

Heres a nice tool for the conversion to see what Im talking about

http://www.testmy.net/tools/convert.php|||there is nothing wrong with that. the speed depends on the server u r downloding it from. you dsl speed might be 1.5mb/s but when u go to certain website and downloding something u will not get the same speed u have 1439kb/s. if the server u r downloading it from have less upload/download speed then u will get less speed and plus u r not the olny person downloading that file there r many other ppl so it gets slow.

Setting up Yahoo DSL high speed internet problem (Red Light)?

I have been trying to get my DSL modem to connect to the internet, but it keeps stopping during installation saying "your modem is not connected to high speed internet". The modem has a blinking red light that keeps coming back when I reboot the modem for 40 seconds. I have all the phone filters on. Alls cables are connected properly. I have registered. The connection test is failing with ADSl. Anyone know what to do?|||p.s. I am able to ask this question on the internet because I have high speed online with another company right now and I am just trying to set up the DLS before I switch to it.

i read this and the first thing i think of is Hmmmm wonder if this person has a dsl account setup yet by verizon .. if verizon ( the one giving you the yahoo dsl account ) has not called you and said your dsl is now active , nothing is gonna work . because the dsl line is not active yet|||Make sure you have your filters in the right spot. it makes a difference. you may have your modem cable and phone line backwards.|||conect modem with out filter, en deconect all phones. reset you modem one more time, if still boxin red you don.t have DSL service from local probide.some times you modem requested cat5 cable or A/O|||I had the same EXACT problem.

It ended up just being my computer!!!!

As soon as i hooked up the modem to another computer, it worked!!!!

If you have a good PC the DO NOT install the software!!!

It works better without it!!!!

Also try typing http://192.168.1.0 in a browser

You need you account password and username though.|||you need to call yahoo/att. they dont have your home hooked up to receive it yet|||Yep, sounds like you have account issues. Recheck your credentials on your DSL modem and verify they are correct. It is best to get familiar with the actual DSL modem web interface and specific configuration options from it rather then using some cheesy setup disk provided by your ISP. You'll of course need to know what your user name and password are and make sure you use the correct connection options which they'll be able to layout for you. How are you asking the question if you have no Internet?

I have 4mbps DSL connection with Saudi telecom (STC) but speed is 50kbps to 600kbps max. Is it just me?

I used to have 1mbps DSL connection working perfectly. Suddenly, my speed dropped to lower than 100kbps, surprisingly at the same time STC releases faster speeds.

So, I upgraded to 4mbps. Now, my DSL modem connects at 3.5mbps instead of 4mbps and the maximum speed I get with downloads ranges between 50kbps to 600kbps and never more. If I connect through dialup on the same line, I sometimes get better performance than my 4mbps DSL line.

I opened 7 trouble tickets with STC since February 2008 and 4 complaints, and I got empty promises and lies. I'm stuck paying a lot of money for dialup speed.

If I test my connection using http://www.speedtest.net/ I get around 300kbps most of the time.

Is it just me? What can I do?|||Well you can only download data from a web server at the speed it can send it to you. so if a web server can only send it to you at 600kbps, then thats as fast as it will go.

i have an 8mbps internet connection but only get 7616 kbps, and thats because of the distance i live from the exchange, the further you live, the slower your speed will be, so your 4mbps connection only being 3.5 is normal.

I'm using AT&T DSL with a 6 MBPS service, but am only receiving a maximum of 1.5 MBPS. How can I solve that?

I have two different computers receiving a DSL connection, and for each computer I ran several different speed tests with the same results. I can understand a minor underperformance, but this is insane. Could it be a hardware issue? AT%26amp;T informed me clearly over the phone that I'm subscribed to a 6 MBPS service, but I don't see anything close to that peek.|||Start by connecting your computer directly to your modem. Go to http://www.speedtest.net and run a speed test from the nearest server to your location. If you are still only connecting at 1.5 Mbps then the problem lies either in your modem, or the phone company. If this remedies your problem, reconnect your router, and connect only one computer at a time. Perform the speedtest from each port on your router with one computer, and record the results. If you still get full speed service then connect both computers, and try a variety of port combinations. This will help determine if there is a hardware failure within the router, if some ports give different results than others, or simply an incorrect setting. If the problem lies in the router, contact your router's manufacturer for support on troubleshooting or RMA procedure.

Best of luck

Verizon DSL Speed?

I did a few different tests to see the speed of my connection. I am so far behind in speed compared to people in my area on the same ISP. How to increase Internet speed.?

I've recently speed tested my verizion dsl (I have the basic 15.00$ low grade plan.) and saw that the download speed is 649kb/s. This is really slow it takes a 100 megabyte file 30 minutes to down load. So I was wondering is there any way to increase the download speed and improve my overall internet speed without upgrading my plan.|||No. You would need to upgrade your plan. Your provider controls your throughput and there is nothing you can do to change it except an upgrade.|||i'm extremely sorry to say that there is no tangible way to increase your speed with out upgrading , folks will suggest internet boosters but if you check the speed using http://www.ip-details.com/internet-speed鈥?/a> before and after installing the software there wont be any difference|||Actually, cable is faster than dsl. If you still think the cable is slow, you can apply for the high-speed cable for about $70 per month.|||nope, you gotta pay for more bandwidth

btw: my pc %26gt; Intel's core i3 , 2 GB of ram , 500 HDD , Windows 7 ultimate (32-bit)

please help|||Hey,

Don't get confused mbps means megabits per second NOT MB!

It works like this..

0.56mbps = Broadband connection of 560kbps

1.6mbps = Broadband connection of 16000kbps/1.6mbps

500mbps = T1 Broadband Connection of 500mbps which is used in a large working enviroment.

It's completely normal, and changing your system specifications doesn't increase your connection it all depends on the servers your downloading from, and how much upload speed they have for you to download of them.

Things to remember.

- The mbps IS NOT MB it's mb if you get say a 54mbps then you will recieve data transmitting from your router @ 5400kbps/5.4MBps. It's NOT 5400MBPS don't get confused!

- If a lot of devices are using your internet connection then the data that's recieved will be shared, but there are prioritys you can set. I.E port 1 is the main priority on data bandwith.

- Connected Via a eithernet cable would be the best option as data packets sent from your ADSL line are sometimes lost whilst using wireless on devices, which can actually cause .rar's to currupt if it's missed a packet it's suppost to download.

Good Luck.|||assuming that your connection is DSL- 786 KBPS

down - 0.78 mbps = 780 kbps - that is kilo bits per second so near max of your connection bit-rate

up - 0.36 mbps = 360 kbps

There are different technologies for dsl connections but it seems like yours is asymmetric - meaning your upload will always be slower than download (i.e. I have 30mbps DSL and my upload is 0.7 mbps).|||That depends on how far you are away from the exchange. With those figures I'd say at least 5-10 miles away.

You can see how fast people in your area are getting on www.adslguide.org

Done a speed test for Mb and got this help?

IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps

DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2336 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1738 kbps

so how fast is it?|||common DSL people using is ADSL, and the download speed is always greater than upload, the diff is because we're more downloading then uploading.

448kbps is about little less than 1/2 of 1Mb (1Mb = 1,000kb, to be exact, it's 1,024kb), this is for your uploading, which is not bad, on the average of fast upload is about 500's, so yours is not bad.

2336kbps of your download is about little over 2Mbps, that's good. I don't know what speed does your ISP promised you, you have to check on that. Say, if your ISP said your DL connection is 3Mbs, then as you can i see, your speed is a little over 2Mbs, the diff is less than 1Mbs. Why is there the diff? Did your ISP cheated u? I can't tell, but I can help you clear up something suspicous.

The more you live close to the Central Office (CO), the faster your connection, so, if you live within 18,000 ft (that about 3 miles "1 mi = 5280ft"), your connection won't be much less diff than what your ISP told you, but the farther you live away from the CO, your connect will signicantly drop. Now, this is just one of the reasons, why your speed is slower than promised.

Other reasons can be anything else, like using internet during prime time, especially during the evening, when everyone is on the net, or your computer doesn't set up correctly to use to its max.

if you email me, i'll show you how to get the max out of your system, help to increase your internet experience :)|||You have a 2Mbps speed...profile but your actual speed during the test was 1.738Mbps|||this means you are on a 2mbps line. and basically your download speed will remain about 2mbps.|||You can download at Max 1738 Kbps.

But these figures can be wrong.

Internet speed depends on many factors.

The Site you are downloading from.

The Load on the Server

The traffic on the Server

The traffic on your ISP

The traffic on your Link

The traffic on your Line

The traffic on your LAN Card

The Load on your CPU

Many factors.

When i got my dsl setup, the guy called someone and was able to decrease and increase my speed. Can i do this?

he came and set it up. then he called some guy and said to turn it down to 300kbps just to test it. then turned it up to 4.2Mbps. I'm paying for 6Mbps not 4.2Mbps. Can i increase this speed myself? Download/Upload Speed Seem Pretty Low?

Well, first off, my family DOES have DSL connection, however lately my streaming and flash videos online have been VERY choppy and have been buffering quite a lot. Well, I decided to go to Speakeasy.net and run a speed test and these were the results:

Download Speed: 275 kpbs

Upload Speed: 106 kpbs

These numbers seem very low for DSL-speed internet. (I have NCISP if that matters or not)

What could be some causes for this?

thanks!|||unfortunately, your family is paying for the slowest possible dsl speed one can buy (256kbps), so you're stuck

unless you persuade your family to upgrade the internet speed|||Ya, thats slow. The T-carrier is 1.5Mbps each way. Call your ISP and complain. If some one else on your LAN is using a lot of P2P apps, tell them to stop, or enable QoS on your router or buy a QoS router or buy a separate QoS box (much cheaper).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>|||There are a number of reasons it can be extra slow. First off go to the speedguide site listed below. They have free utilities to speed up you connection. The only reason these work is because when you install windows, it always assumes you are in a cubicle attached to a office network. Not so most of the time, and so the communications protocols can be optimized to work with your connection.

If you will go to www.pcpitstop.com they will analyze your computer determine your actual speed and recommend certain fixes, like the internet cache, etc.

It is also possible that your IP has sold too many subscriptions on one server. When everyone is on, the speed and bandwidth suffer. Certain times of day may be worse than others.|||Check what the actual speed is meant to be. Also check their policy regarding shared bandwidth. If they use this, your connection can get slower each time they provide more services.|||well for DSL that is pretty low i have charter 3 MBPS and download stream is 3000 kpbs upload around 250kpbs.....u maybe have firewall or somekind of anti-virus that may limit ur connection speeds....also it can it u maybe have other downloads on or other videos buffering ....and it can reduce speed....

Next right click your task bar, select task manager and tell me how many programs you have running. If it is over 42, that is too many and it slows you down. To stop junk from running at startup, if you have XP type "msconfig" in the run box. Then click the startup tab. Uncheck all the boxes and restart.

You may have to recheck some of the boxes if, for example, your printer stops working.|||Download this free program called TCP Optimizer. What determines maximum DSL internet speed?

My dad is currently subscribed to the 3mbps DSL service from our local telephone company (Hawaiian telcom), I recently found out that they offer a 7mbps and an 11mbps DSL service. I called Hawaiian telcom to ask if we could get the 11mbps service, and they said that our line can only support a speed of 1.5mbps, but I tested the download speed of our 3mbps service and was able to download files at the advertised speed of 3mbps. Why was the phone company giving false information? and what is required for the line to be able to provide 7mbps or 11mbps?|||The distance between your location and the location of the "divider box" (sorry, but I do not know what the correct English word would be for it) in your area determines the maximum speed of your DSL connection, as well as the internals of this "divider box" itself. If it is shared with many users in your area, the speed will drop as well. Your Internet Service Provider will not lie to you about the maximum speed, as they will always want to try to sell you the most expensive subscription of course. You can test your download and upload speed at http://www.speedtest.net. If the speed is higher than what you were told, contact them and tell them that the speed is higher than they claim is possible. Still, it might be that 3 Mbps is the maximum possible for your location.|||The distance from the nearest phone company switching station (exchange) and the line power determine the top speed the ISP can offer. Real world speed depends on the internet itself and your computer.

You are probably too far away from the exchange for 11mbps speed. Why do you think you need that much speed? If you are streaming hd video, maybe cable would be a better choice.

Bittorrent speed drops rapidly on AT&T DSL?

I download torrents (cant stress this enough THE LEGAL STUFF). When my speed is at around 200kbs for a while, it suddenly drops to less then 4kbs. Same with my upload speed. I ran an online speed test to see if my speed is messed up. But it turns out that my internet is fine. I also run PG2 so i don't get corrupt peers. Whats going on? All the trackers appear to be fine too.|||It can be a matter of your internet traffic. Your ISP might be throttling your connection. It's not fully legal or illegal, but it's what they are allowed to do.

By using P2P programs, the company will likely associate you with downloading illegal files. Likely, your ISP is throttling the P2P connection, which would result in randomness in speeds.|||Comcast decided to do throttling to ppl using 70% of their bandwidth now b/c their bandwidth cap wasn't working enough to their needs|||try to uninstall bittorrent and get ultorrent its way better doesnt do that 200 staight to 4kb/s thing.

Please estimate my internet speed for a laptop (using router)?

Ok, I recently ordered laptop+router and was wondering how much of internet speed I would be able to get. I need some expertise on this, so please do not say it's going to be fast enough / just wait for it to come blah blah etc.

First, my wired DSL speed for main desktop (I ran speed test):

2.54Mbps (430kbps for upload)

Second, my laptop's wireless card: Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini-card (supposedly 300Mbps is max, but we know it's not gonna happen)

Third, my router: Linksys WRT160N Wireless Router (not much of an idea how good this is, but we know it's better than normal G's)

Fourth, I will be using this laptop in my room, which is about 20~25ft away from where router will be (plus 1 wall in the way).

Thank you!|||your bottle neck will be your internet connection speed. You can only be as fast as your weakest link. it doesn't matter what type of ethernet card you have (10/100, 1000, wireless g or n) you are only going to get what your internet connection allows. if you are transferring data around on your internal network it will be alot faster than transferring over the internet.|||you should get around the same or close to what your desktop is getting|||speed test. www://toast.net|||First it depend on bandwidth speed you receive if you do not know your bandwidth speed test it here

My dsl tests at .52mb/s, why is actual download speed only 20kb/s?

I'm paying for about .5 mb/s that I'm not getting, I don't get it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.|||You've got to differentiate between megabits (Mbps) and megabytes (MBps). ISP's advertise in megabits so they can look better than they really are. A bit is 1/8 of a byte, and so when you're downloading in firefox/IE, and it says 20 KB/s, thats 20 kilobytes, which is 160 kilobits. Granted, that is less than 500 kilobits, but you see the issue. The best speed you could hope for is 500/8, or 62.5 KB/s.|||As a rule of thumb:

(Download speed divided by 10) minus 20 to 25% = average download speed

So the download speed of a broadband connection with 500kbps (0.5Mbps) results in:

(500 / 10) * 0.80 = 40 kBps resp. (500 / 10) * 0.75 = 37.5 kBps

I reach with my 8Mbps link a download speed of around 820kbps, it all depends on the overbooking the provider makes. If you live in a crowded area it is possible the speeds are lower, Of course it also depends on the connection of the remote server where you connect to.

It looks indeed your connection is a bit slow
