BT broadband speed test?

hi all, i have 8meg broadband with bt. Now i know the speed isnt going to be the max, but i have just done a speedtest on speedtester.bt.com and not sure what the results mean, can any1 explain to me what these results mean posted below.

thanks

IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps

DSL connection rate:

288 kbps(UP-STREAM)

2272 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1796 kbps

thanks|||OK Well I have 8Mb BT broadband too but this is not necessarily what your particular phone line will support. The actual speed depends on contention ratio (how many people you share the line with) distance from the exchange and so on.

IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps

DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7584 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6120 kbps

The results above are for my line on the same test I'm supposed to get 6.5Mb and actually got 6.1Mb on the test.I live less than a mile from the exchange.

I suspect that virtually no one gets the full 8Mb but your results seem very low - you're supposed to get only 2Mb and actually got even less than that - 1.7Mb!

1000Kbs = 1Mbs = 1Meg (K = 1,000 and M = 1,000,000)|||Hi,

You can get the broad band speed as uploading %26amp; downloading details from http://www.ip-details.com/

|||basically means youve got a 2 meg connection|||Upstream is the maximum speed you can send files, down stream is the speed you can download files. I presume you IP profile is what your modem is synchronised at (what you pay for), and actual IP is what your actually getting so in conclusion:

Your IP profile is 2meg a quarter of what you supposedly pay for, you can upload at a maximum of 36k (divide by 8 to get speeds in kbs) and your download speed is 284. You actual connection speed at the time of testing was less than the 2meg the lines set at, it was 1796.

Your not getting anywhere near 8meg, the line isn't even synchronised for 8meg (could be due to contortion factors and errors on the line etc)|||the speed you recieve is actually dependent upon your distance from the exchange. i have bt and i get varying results depending on what time of the day i run them, i would be seriously upset though if i was paying for 8 and only just getting 2. you should ring them up and complain. you may get some satisfaction but seeing as its Bt, i would not hold your breath. i for one will not be renewing when my contract runs out.
