Why is my AT&T DSL slower than 6 Megabits per second when that's what I pay for every month?

I have AT%26amp;T 6Mb/s DSL, the kind where you don't have to actually have telephone service in your home as long as you have a telephone jack in the wall to plug into. Anyway, I've had the service for about 3 months and my speed tests always come out to a 1.5Mb/s download speed. AT%26amp;T insists otherwise when I call customer service.|||Hello,

Normally ISPs always advertise the maximum speed you might get up/down to and not the will get up/down to. Also DSL speed can get lower depending how far you are from the central hub station of the phone company, the quality of the lines, overloaded computer or/with spyware which normally comunicates information in the background to (a) server(s).

One other thing that can also affect is if you have a router it could be un-synchronized from the DSL modem. To help protect from un-synchronizing, take a look at the router's manual for instructions on how to change the IP address of the router as it might have the factory IP which could be the same of the modem and that when it un-synchonizes. If it's a wireless make sure it's password protected, so no one else uses your connection and slow it down.

I hope this information answer's your question.
