I live in a rural area where there is no cable or DSL. I have slow expensive wireless service through TWN. Pages download very slowly. When I watch a YouTube or news video it spends more time buffering than playing . But when I run a speed test such as Speakeasy I get speeds from 770 to 990 kbps. Can an isp detect speed tests and increase bandwidth just for the test?
When I first signed up with TWN the speed was much faster.|||The problem is most likely with the Adobe Flash player, not your ISP. When Flash sees packets being dropped (UDF) or retransmitted (TCP), it increases the amount that it buffers in case this continues to happen.
A quick test of youtube ("Why Lindsay Lohan Loves Fashion Week") showed an initial burst of 250kbs followed by an extended 125kbs transmission. That's only about 1/3 of your measured bitrate, but if one of the packets is delayed while the Flash player is buffering, the player will request a retransmission instead of simply continuing without the missing packet and increase the amount it buffers. Of course, with a bigger buffer there's even more chance of this happening a second time, then a third, before the player decides it's safe to start playing the media.
This doesn't happen with a speed test because all that counts there is that the entire file arrives and can be reconstructed without error. It doesn't matter if the packets arrive in bursts, or even if they arrive out of order. This is common with VSAT connections, because for $$$$ you get immediate access to the link whenever you need it, and for $ you wait until $$$$ is done.|||I had a problem similar to your and Verizon said that my speed was fine and blah blah blah. My wireless would always shut off and my pc tower connected through hardwire (ethernet cable) was slow. After fighting with Verizon for a very long two weeks I got a new modem/router. The device made a difference and now I have wireless all the time and internet is fine. It is not your linksys router, but your companies modem. Get it changed (FOR FREE) and do not let them charge you a penny. It may make a big difference.|||Unlikely, but anything is possible. Don't just use your ISP's speed test. Try using this one. http://www.speedtest.net/
If you are still finding the test to say you have a faster speed and still experience slow connections then you may want to run a virus scan, and also get something like AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.com/) for free and run a scan with that also.|||Use the site http://www.ip-details.com/internet-speed鈥?/a> It shows the accurate Speed of the Broadband or DSL or ADSL or what ever connection you have In here there is no possiblity ti fake high speed by provider..It shows what is true..

This is something new to me, I don't think that it is possible, as the test speed servers are not in anyway related to the ISP so they can't control these servers, I am using http://www.thinktel.ca/ for the past few months for my business and it is working great. And yes, you are right viruses can also slow down the speed of your internet as background processes also eat your connection speed.
