Why is my sbcglobal dsl slow?

I have sbcglobal dsl. If I run any speed test then it shows I have 5 Mbs download speed. However anytime I download using IE or firefox or a download manager it just won't get over 600 kbps a second. I have a laptop and when I take it to work I can download the same file at a much higher speed. Anyone else run into this problem?|||Contact SBC ask them to run a test, something maybe wrong with the line they have you connected to.|||You have a speed of 5 Mega bits per second, which equal approximately 600 kilo Bytes per second (1 Byte = 8 bits). Your internet is not slow, it is exactly the speed as it should be, just presented in a different format when you download vs. when you do a speed test.

|||Lots of reasons. Just having 5 Mbps service doesn't mean you're going to get that speed all the time. If the site from which you're downloading stuff has a smaller pipe, you're only going to get the data as fast as they can push it down their data pipe.

Some ISPs also throttle downloads. Essentially, they only allow certain kinds of downloads to go to a certain speed. This conserves bandwidh for everyone.|||mine is very fast, as fast as time warner cable , idk why but it is
