How do I test my DSL connection speed?

I used a few websites and the download speeds vary a lot

site 1: measures an average 3.8Mb/s

site 2: gives me about 7Mb/s

site3: 12Mb/s!!

What do I trust? Can you people recommend a good, reliable, and accurate way to measure my bandwidth? I live in Australia and my ISP is Optus (in you need this extra info).|||they all are probably correct!

those tests are checking your connection speed to their servers. if their server is on the opposite side of the world, it may have a slower link than to the guy next door to you.

pick a site closest to you, and run the tests on multiple similar distance sites.

the speed they are giving you is the one you can expect from anyone in that region.

if the site is a .com address, it is probabaly in the usa, hence the slower number. one thats in australia/new zealand may give a faster number as they are giving you the current achieved speed that you are making to their site.|||yea it tests you speed relative to a server... the further the sever the less speed respectively. if you go to www.speedtest.net you can choose a sever closest to you to get the best results.
