What would make my DSL speed drop?

When I first upgraded my DSL package I test the speed at over 1.5Mbps. Now I'm getting 500 - 800Kbps. Is there something I could have done to reduce the speed? What can I try in order to see if I can get back to those glorious early results?|||Most residential DSL subscriptions are over a shared DSL line. So if there are others in your neighborhood subscribing to the DSL line you are on, your speed decreases as the number of users active on the line increase. So if everyone is online at the same time it's going to be very.... slow. My friend notices that after dinner her speed drops to that of a dial up connection...|||one your signal is low or to there is too much stuff on your computer or Internet files and history are Way to full.|||Try deleting cookies, history, and temporary files. They can slow it down quite a bit. If that doesn't help, it may be your phone lines. If possible, try going on late at night or early in the morning when not as many people are using computers or telephones (during the week, because more people are on late during weekends). If your speed improves, you are on a busy exchange. If there is no improvement, you can check with your phone company or DSL provider to find out if there is something causing it to be slow.

This winter, I'm even having trouble with my cable Internet connection. The main server has lines that are iced up badly, and it is slowing everyone down.|||Hate to say this but it is probably your provider. I use SBC (AT%26amp;T) and over the time I've had DSL they have learned to control the speed enough to offer different levels of packages so to maintain my original speed I need to subscribe to the "PRO" package. Since they offer lots of incentives it hasn't really cost me anymore just a pain to change my subscription.
